Dimension capabilities

Postby jiwameister » Fri Mar 19, 2010 3:21 pm

With the planned dimension functionality, it would be great to be able to have a dimension that could replace or enhance functionality where you post sales data by product or by customer postings.

Eg: You could have a dimension that is used in both debtors and inventory, but is the common to both. You might assign defaults at a customer, customer classification, inventory or inventory classification level.

To do this properly however you would need to take into account precedence as the value could be set in more than one spot - and individual preferences would dictate which value "wins".

Wow - that's pretty advanced stuff - I and visualise how it might look, and it *sounds* like a cool idea - but could you provide an example of the business problem you're trying to solve with this ? It will just help us to crystallise the problem it is trying to solve in our minds.

Sure, take this example:

A customer wants to have a situation where a particular aspect of their business requires sales reporting at Sales Territory Level, and as such would set Jiwa to post by Debtor Classification.

However the same customer has some exceptions in another business unit where sales territory is not useful, or doesnt make sense (eg supplying to a distribution centre, not to individual end customers) and would prefer to drive the sales posting by product type.

In Jiwa this is not really possible at the moment as you need to make a choice one way or the other.

Sales Analysis dimensions that could be applied at the levels I mentioned would allow per product group, and per customer group combinations to get the right result.

A practical example would be a wholesale and retail business split.

This would give you enough flexibility to not have to use a single method across all products.

Ok - so we're taking a rule dictating if a dimension is to be captured ?

ie: If customer.Category1 = "X" then
Capture Dimension "Blah"ElseIf customer.Category1 = Y" Then
Capture Dimension "Yak"
Else
No Dimension capture
End If

Likey ?
